Kelly to receive Hammond Sports Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement
Award at induction dinner March 14
Girls high school
sports pioneer, proponent and former longtime Gavit High School
coach Margaret Kelly will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award
from the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame at its 31st annual induction
dinner March 14.
During the 1960s,
Kelly introduced girls high school athletics at Gavit High School.
Between 1965 and 1993 she coached seven different sports teams
and led her squads to nine sectional titles, three regional
crowns and six Girls Athletic Association championships.
She also advanced
girls high school sports as a basketball and volleyball official.
Additionally, she earned respect across the state as an active
member for more than three decades of the Indiana High School
Athletic Association Girls Advisory Committee that worked diligently
to introduce state tournament competition in all girls sports.
Kelly will be honored
with the following Class of 2017 Hall of Fame inductees
